How to play Eight Off
Goal
Remove all the cards onto the foundations starting with the Ace.
Layout & deal
The layout used by Eight Off is similar to FreeCell, except that you can use 8 free cells to hold your cards instead of 4. At the start of the game, 48 cards are dealt face-up into 8 tableau piles, 6 cards to each pile. The remaining 4 cards are dealt to the first 4 cells, one to each. The foundation piles are empty at the start.
Allowable moves
- Tableau piles are built down by rank and by suit.
- On the tableau, sequences which are correctly ordered can be moved together, depending on the number of empty cells. Maximum sequence length equals the number of empty cells + 1.
- Cells can contain only 1 card.
- Only Kings (or sequences starting with a King) can be moved to an empty tableau pile.
- Foundations are built up in-suit (by increasing rank).
History
As Eight Off introduced the concept of temporary storage spaces for single cards (free cells), Eight Off is considered to be the oldest ancestor to FreeCell. Another game based on Eight Off is Baker's Game.
Variants
- FreeCell: Similar layout as Eight Off, except only 4 cells instead of 8. Building on the tableau is by alternating colour instead of by suit.
- Baker’s Game: Follows the exact same rules as Eight Off, but has only 4 cells instead of 8.
